Learn to Knit Socks (March 23rd & April 20th)

Rye Light Socks

Course Overview
Always wanted to make a pair of socks? Maybe you tried once and it didn’t go well? Maybe it looks too complicated? This is your chance to get past that fear and learn how to make socks!

Socks are a fun, portable, functional item beloved by many knitters. Learning to make socks involves a number of steps, so we’ve broken the class into 2 3-hour sessions 4 weeks apart, giving you lots of time to work on your socks.

Skills Taught
In this class we will learn about sock construction as well as explore various methods and techniques by working on a pair of socks that fit! We will learn each of the steps to create socks to include: casting on; working in the round; turning the heel; working the sock gusset; working the foot of the sock; and finally finishing the toe.

We will review the three methods of knitting socks: using double points; using two circular needles; and using one circular needle, also known as “magic loop”.  We will also discuss knitting socks using the “toe-up” method.

In the class, we will knit our socks using double points, the oldest method of making socks. We will also work from the top of the leg down to the toe. The techniques you learn in this class will apply to all three methods.

Skills Required
You should be able to cast-on, knit, purl, and bind off without assistance.
